Gynecomastia - clarification of the term and its causes

Breasts, whether male or female, consist of two components from the anatomical point of view. On the one hand from hard and solid tissue and on the other hand from fatty tissue. The ratio of glandular and fatty tissue of the breast is different for each individual.

A male breast is an overproduction of glands and adipose tissue. Excess fat is present.

But there is also a wrong gynecomastia. In this case, it's just excess fat, not swollen glands. The term gynecomastia is the Greek word for female breast and was first used by a physician named Galen around the second century AD. Only in modern times was this term also used for the male breast.

Gynecomastia is uncommon in men and occurs at birth or most commonly during puberty. It is due to hormonal activity. Some studies have shown that in up to 65% of boys in the group of 14-15 year-olds, breast enlargement or Reductions occur that are sometimes associated with a slight pain. The pain is increasingly caused by the mammary glands. For the majority, however, this condition develops again as soon as the hormone production has stabilized again. Gynecomastia occurs only about 8% in 18-year-old men. However, the number is increased to about 30% in older men.

Although the cause of male breast augmentation has not yet been clearly established, there is no doubt that the most important reason for the formation of enlarged breasts in men is the effect of circulating hormones on certain breast cells. Scientific studies have found that it is an imbalance of male and female hormones in the male body (yes, men also have female hormones in the body). The different ratio of these hormones in turn lead to varying degrees of male breast.

If it is a pseudo-gynaecomastia, the breasts are enlarged only by excess fat. In addition to the cause of the hormonal imbalance, it may also be a cause that is directed to the consumption of drugs or it is an organic disease.

The introduction of liposuction (liposuction with metal cannulas) revolutionized the surgical treatment of gynecomastia. In the past, the only option was to remove a disproportionately enlarged male breast surgically from excess tissue (fat and glands), but this was unfortunately necessary for skin incisions that were permanently visible. Well, with the help of liposuction, it can be made possible by a few small punctures of about 3-4 mm. Enlarged glands are then removed only by another small cut.

Well, with the help of liposuction, it can be made possible by a few small punctures of about 3-4 mm. Enlarged glands are then removed only by another small cut.

It is therefore important to note that, despite the introduction of liposuction, in those patients who also have enlarged glandular tissue (gynaecomastia), an additional surgical incision is needed, usually around the nipples. Everything detailed is determined in a personal conversation.

Despite the fact that this was only a surgical solution to the problem, it must be said that it is not the only solution. It can also be by hormone treatment, if the patient is still in puberty and it is the true gynecomastia with swollen glands.

Gynecomastia - Overview

An enlarged male breast can be a very intimate and uncomfortable problem. Often, however, people in their environment can not understand and can not understand why the person would like to undergo surgical treatment. A very simple operation and a subsequent improvement in well-being, however, provide proof that it is worthwhile. Many affected men now think that they should have performed the surgery years ago.
